Next on Your Bucket List: Poros, Greece!
Nested in the Saronic Gulf, Poros is a small, island-pair in Greece well known for its pastel-colored homes and sparkling turquoise waters. The island is perfect for a weekend getaway or relaxing vacation, with all its delicious cuisines, interesting histories, and breathtaking sights. Poros, actually made up of two small islands called Sphaeria and Kalaureia, is lined with restaurants and tavernas serving a variety of food (Starr, 2020). The family-run tavernas are famous for their flavorful dishes that feature fresh fish, locally grown vegetables, and even snails (Bradley, 2017)! At a place like the I. Karayiannis Bakery, you can enjoy some appetizing gelato while enjoying the dazzling view from the relaxing terrace (Starr, 2020).
Another great part about Poros is the depth of history the island-pair offers for exploration! The ruins of the Temple of Poseidon still remains in the north part of the island (Vervenioti, 2017). Here, you can see what remains of the ancient Temple built centuries ago and marvel at the intricacies of the Doric and Ionian architecture styles (Vervenioti, 2017). Another must-see sight is the Holy Monastery of Zoodochos Pege of Poros, which was founded in 1720 by the Archbishop of Athens. The Archbishop built this monastery on the slope of a pine forest to express his gratitude after drinking holy water from the area and becoming cured of his ailments (Vervenioti, 2017).
